Tech journalists have been summoned to the San Jose campus of eBay Wednesday for the official unveiling of the so-called "Bloom Box" at a high-powered event to include Bloom co-founder and CEO K.R. Sridhar, venture capitalist John Doerr, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and "a prominent California government official" widely believed to be Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Bloom is the first cleantech investment in the vast portfolio of venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caulfied & Byers, where Doerr is a partner and where Powell and Sridhar are "strategic limited partners."

Fuel cells typically use the chemical energy of hydrogen to cleanly and efficiently produce electricity, according to the Department of Energy, and have a variety of applications. They can provide energy for utility-scale power stations as well as small laptop computers.
